Creating Translation Files

Use the URL Parameter Analysis dialog box to create definitions for the dynamic pages that you want to track.

To create a URL Parameter Analysis definition, complete the following steps. The example URL used for this procedure is:

    www.webtrends.com/site_download/download.htm?product=0014
  1. From the links at the top of the WRC AdminConsole, click Advanced Features.

  2. Select the URL Parameter Analysis tab and click Add.

  3. In the Description text box, type a name for this URL Parameter Analysis definition. This description identifies the definition in the Advanced Features dialog box, in the profile dialog box, and in reports. For example, for our example, type Downloads here.

  4. In the Page Name text box, type the name of the web page used by this definition. This is how the page appears in the log file. For our example, in the Page Name text box, you would type:

        /site_download/download.htm

Note: To specify a home page, type a slash (/) in the Page Name text box. If the site is multi-homed, you must also specify the domain name. For example, if the domains webtrends.com and webtrends.net are both hosted by one server, and you are reporting on pages for webtrends.net only, the Page Name text box would look like this:

        http://www.webtrends.net/downloads/default.asp

  5. To specify that your Page Name entry is a regular expression, select the Regular Expression check box.

  6. To see how the expression works on a sample string, click Test.

  7. Define the primary parameter that you want to report on.

    1. In the Primary Parameter text box, type the name of the primary parameter. Parameters are located in the URL immediately after a question mark and they are followed by an equal sign and a return value. If there are multiple parameters, they are separated by an ampersand (&). For our example, you’d type product.

    2. By default, the Primary Parameter name is used in reports. If you want a more descriptive name to be used, type that name in the Name To Display In Reports text box.

    3. If you want to translate the parameter, select the Translate Parameter Values Into More Meaningful Strings check box then, in the Location Of Translation File text box, type or browse the path to the file that will store the translation.

  8. To narrow your focus, define a second parameter to be reported on (this is optional).

    1. In the Secondary Parameter text box, type the name of the secondary parameter.

    2. By default, the Secondary Parameter name is used in reports. If you want a more descriptive name to be used, type that name in the Name To Display In Reports text box.

    3. If you want to translate the parameter, select the Translate Parameter Values Into More Meaningful Strings check box then, in the Location Of Translation File text box, type or browse the path to the file you want to use to store the translation.

Note: The report table that is generated using the primary and secondary parameters includes a column for each parameter value and breaks down the activity for each parameter.

  9. Click OK. The Advanced Features dialog box reappears with the URL Parameter Analysis tab showing.
URL Parameter Analysis definitions associate a page with the parameters used to create it. For example, to determine which item on your products page is the most popular, specify the parameter to look at. The number of hits and visitor sessions for each value submitted with that parameter are collected in the Dynamic Page reports. To make reports more understandable, create a translation file which defines a meaningful phrase for each value.
